Math Circle - Christopher Newport University

Department of Mathematics

Math Circle

Registration is now open for fall 2022.

The Math Circle is an enrichment program for students in grades 8-12 in the Hampton Roads area who have a strong interest in mathematics. We seek to broaden students' perceptions of what it means to do mathematics in an informal and friendly atmosphere while working on challenging yet accessible problems.

The program is led by CNU faculty and focuses on exploration, logical reasoning, and problem-solving. We cover nonstandard and traditional topics in great depth and from different points of view.

The Math Circle is not a remedial math program, test preparation, or an accelerated program. The goal is to expose students to mathematical concepts they would not normally be exposed to in a traditional school setting.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in grades 8-12 in a Hampton Roads area school and must have completed algebra and geometry. We admit qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. Seats are limited.

Cost

There is a $100 registration fee for supplies, travel expenses for guest speakers, snacks, and other expenses. Payment is due after the first two meetings, to ensure students are a good fit for the program. No student will be turned back for not being able to pay the fee.

Location

Math Circle will meet 4:30 - 6 p.m., every second and fourth Wednesday of the month.

If you would like to join Math Circle, please email Dr. Mihaela Dobrescu, associate professor of mathematics, at mihaela.dobrescu@cnu.edu, with Math Circle in the subject line. Include your child's age, grade, math level, and a brief paragraph describing his or her interest in mathematics beyond regular classwork.
