Majors and Minors
We offer a bachelor of science degree in biology with the following majors:
- Cellular, molecular and physiological biology
- Kinesiology
You can also pursue a bachelor of arts degree in biology.
We also offer a bachelor of science in chemistry with the following majors:
- Chemistry (American Chemical Society certified)
- Chemistry (non-ACS certified)
- Biochemistry (ACS certified)
You can also minor in biology or chemistry.
All biology majors complete three principles of biology courses. These three courses introduce students to the science of life beginning at the molecular level and progressing to organisms and ecosystems, while the accompanying labs provide hands-on experiences that reinforce this learning. After finishing the foundation courses, students in the bachelor of science program select their major area and take upper-level courses that further develop critical-thinking skills and field techniques.
The chemistry curriculum includes courses in each fundamental area of chemistry, including:
- Organic chemistry, the study of carbon-based compounds
- Inorganic chemistry, the study of noncarbon-based matter
- Physical chemistry, the study of the physical characteristics and behavior of matter
- Analytical chemistry, the branch of chemistry that deals with the detection and quantification of matter.
The biochemistry program bridges the biology and chemistry majors and seeks to study the processes of life at the chemical level. In addition to introductory and foundational courses in biology and chemistry, the biochemistry major emphasizes the structures and functions of biomolecules and metabolic pathways.
Laboratory work is an integral part of most upper-division courses.

Christopher Newport’s Pre-med & Pre-health Program helps students from any major prepare to apply to medical and other health programs. Many students find that a biology major provides excellent preparation for these career choices.
The program offers academic and career advising, mentoring, clinical internship opportunities, workshops and seminars to help you gain admission to the professional school of your choice.
Sample Courses
A survey of the principal molecular constituents of living organisms, including carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and proteins. Macromolecular structure-function relationships and enzyme kinetics are emphasized.
Introduction to the morphology, physiology and genetics of bacteria, fungi and viruses.
A study of the structure and function of the human body that includes concepts of relevant cellular and molecular biology and histology before investigating the major organ systems. Systems included in this course are: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, sensory and endocrine.
Theory and practice in the use of modern instrumentation, such as liquid and gas chromatographs, spectrophotometers, the x-ray defractometer and more, for the solution of analytical problem.
