Administration and Program Scholarships

The following scholarships are administered by various programs and offices around campus. If you have any questions regarding these scholarships, please contact either the respective program/office or the Office of Financial Aid.

These scholarships are awarded by the Bonner Service Program in addition to the annual scholarship the program awards eligible students. For more information about joining the Bonner Service Scholarship Program, please see the program admission criteria or contact the Office of Admission.

Peninsula Rotary Club Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to full-time students who demonstrate commitment to the Rotary’s ideals of service above self, as well as international understanding. Recipient must attend a Peninsula Rotary Club meeting. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Safehaven Legacy of Service Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to full-time students who participate in the Center for Community Engagement program, or have completed 16 hours of service to one of the youth agencies in the Center for Community Engagement program. Safehaven Scholars must be from Newport News, Hampton, York County or James City County. In order to qualify, recipients must demonstrate financial need as determined through the FAFSA. Recipients must hold a cumulative 2.75 or higher GPA.

VECU Bonner Scholars Annual Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to students participating in the Bonner Program. Preference will be given to a student who resides in Newport News or Williamsburg, or in the counties of Isle of Wight, James City, Gloucester, Mathews and York or in the Hampton Roads region. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.

T. Jean Everitt Editor-in-Chief Annual Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to full-time students. The recipient of this award must be the editor-in-chief of The Captain's Log. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA. This scholarship is restricted and may only be applied toward tuition charges.

Dr. Marshall Booker Endowed Graduate Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student with 21 or more credit hours. Recipients must have the highest graduate GPA.

These scholarships are awarded in addition to the annual scholarships awarded to students selected for the Honors Program.

Jack W. Clark and Jan S. Clark Annual and Endowed Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to full-time, incoming freshmen in the Honors Program based on academic achievement. Recipients must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.8. Preference is given to those who demonstrate financial need as determined through the FAFSA. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Denise and Brian Eakes Annual Honors Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to full-time students participating in the Honors Program who are academically gifted. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA. In order to qualify, recipients must demonstrate financial need as determined through the FAFSA.

Honors Endowment Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to full-time students participating in the Honors Program who are academically gifted.

Keith McLoughland Endowed Honors Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to a student in good standing in the Honors Program.

Barbara Drucker Smith Endowed Honors Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to full-time students participating in the Honors Program. Recipients of this award must demonstrate an interest in creative writing. Preference is given to residents of Hampton, Newport News, York County or Williamsburg. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Robert Usry Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior.

Charles D. Houdashell Sr. Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to full- or part-time students with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or above. In order to qualify, recipients must be a graduate of the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. This scholarship is restricted and may only be applied toward tuition charges.

Canon Virginia, Inc. Annual Leadership Scholarship Program for STEM Disciplines

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to a student majoring in electrical engineering, computer engineering or computer science. Scholarship recipients must also meet the same eligibility requirements for the President’s Leadership Program. Canon Virginia, Inc. Leadership Scholars who have completed their junior year may be eligible for a paid summer internship with Canon Virginia, Inc. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or above cumulative GPA.

Riverside Medical Group Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to full-time, incoming freshman with a GPA of 3.7 or above and an interest in becoming a physician. This scholarship is renewable. At the discretion of the Health Advisory Council, the scholarship can be renewed up to three additional years, assuming the student maintains a 3.5 cumulative GPA and continues to be enrolled on a full-time basis (12 or more hours).

The Graduated Parents Annual Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time incoming freshman who is a member of the President’s Leadership Program (PLP). Recipients must maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA and remain in good standing with PLP. In order to qualify, recipients must demonstrate financial need as determined through the FAFSA.

Lynda Buckley Alumni Society Endowed Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student. Recipients must be a rising junior or senior who demonstrates leadership, questions the status quo and who has a commitment to selfless leadership. The recipient will be selected by the dean of students. Recipients must maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA.

D. Garland and S. Harmon Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to full-time, rising seniors. The recipient of this award must have contributed significantly to student life and still be involved during his or her senior year. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.

Le Ha Character Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is regarded as an individual of outstanding moral character. Applicants must submit an essay exploring their character and commitment to their family and community, a letter of support from a parent or guardian, and a letter of support from a member of the Christopher Newport community.

Wallace F. McLamb Endowed Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement to a full-time student. The recipient must demonstrate leadership through public service and a true caring for helping others.

Captains Abroad Annual Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student who will study abroad on an approved study abroad program. This can be a Christopher Newport program, exchange or an external (non-CNU) program. Recipients of this award who are participating in an exchange or external program must complete a Financial Aid Request Form that must be on file with the Office of Financial Aid. Recipients also must send documentation of the final course schedule once abroad. If the student changes study abroad programs, the scholarship may be applied to a new study abroad program within the same term if approved by the Study Abroad Office. Any changes to the semester or term for study abroad will result in a forfeit of this scholarship. Recipients must maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA.
