Community Captains


 

Community Captains is an early admission, two-year college preparatory program focused on helping you succeed after high school.

This program is for you if:

  • You are a sophomore at a Newport News public high school
  • You have a 3.2 GPA or 1150 PSAT score AND
  • You will be a first-generation college student, OR meet other criteria as determined by Newport News Public Schools (NNPS)

If selected, you’ll have two years of free, on-campus learning opportunities at Christopher Newport – and will even take a free class for college credit. Each Community Captain will be paired with a current CNU student mentor for guidance and support through all aspects of preparing for college.

  • Is free for NNPS students
  • Offers early admission to Christopher Newport
  • Pairs NNPS students with a CNU student mentor
  • Offers access to educational, cultural and social events at CNU
  • Provides informative sessions facilitated by CNU faculty and staff
  • Offers a free, for-credit course taught by a CNU professor

If eligible, you can apply second semester of your sophomore year. You'll also:

  • Attend an information assembly at your high school
  • Interview with a CNU admission officer
  • Receive an offer of provisional admission
  • Attend an on-campus admitted student program
  • Be offered full admission to Christopher Newport during your senior year, provided you maintain a 3.4 cumulative GPA and fulfill all requirements at your high school
