How to Apply

Transfer applications for all individuals, including applicants under the Senior Citizen's Higher Education Act of 1974, will be considered complete and ready for review once the following are complete:

  1. Submit the Common Application including:
    • Personal statement: Please provide a personal essay (approximately 250 words) indicating why you want to attend Christopher Newport, or provide additional information you would like to share about yourself for the admission committee. This statement is included in your application. Required of all applicants.
    • $65 nonrefundable application fee
  2. Submit official transcript(s) from all colleges and/or universities attended. We accept official transcripts submitted electronically through Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse. Partial transcripts and/or grade reports are required until final grades are posted.
  3. Submit your official high school transcript (required of all applicants).

We recommend all applicants complete the following:

  • One letter of recommendation sent through the Common Application. Up to two more are welcome to be submitted as follows:

  • Submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form by March 1, if applicable.
  • Have your SAT and/or ACT scores sent directly to CNU.

Home-schooled applicants

Submit the School Report Form or the following: a detailed description of curriculum, which may include texts read, course titles and descriptions, skill levels completed, grades received, or performance evaluation.

If curriculum has been supplemented by formal coursework either at the secondary or post-secondary level, official transcripts from the school(s) or college(s) are required.

Virginia In-State Tuition Rates Eligibility

You must complete all questions in the Residency and Parent/Legal Guardian Residency sections of the Common Application to be eligible for in-state tuition. Supporting documents may be requested, and you must submit them on or before the first day of the semester or term for which you are applying.
