While transfer students are not required to live on campus, many do. Housing is offered on a space-available basis. With amenities like shared lounges, study spaces, and easy access to dining and classrooms, you’ll feel right at home.

At Christopher Newport, you won’t just transfer, you’ll belong. Our Transfer Student Orientation, known as Changing Tides, brings new Captains together to connect, explore campus, and feel at home before classes even begin. A warm, supportive community is ready to welcome you and help you start your next chapter with confidence.

Transfer Requirements for CNU

At Christopher Newport, we look beyond numbers. We consider your academic performance, goals, experiences, and potential to thrive as a Captain.

Competitive transfer applicants typically have 12–15 or more college credits and a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Completing at least one college-level math and English course is strongly encouraged, and test scores are optional.

We also value leadership, service, personal statements, extracurricular involvement, and your intended major.

At Christopher Newport University, we believe cost should never stand in the way of your potential. That’s why we work hard to make a world-class education accessible and affordable.

Merit Scholarships for Out-of-State Transfer Students

Qualified out-of-state transfer students may receive $3,000–$5,000 in renewable merit scholarships to help offset the higher cost of attendance for non-Virginia residents. Awards are based on academic performance and available funding, and are renewable each year with continued academic success.

FAFSA and Financial Aid for Transfer Students

CNU offers a wide range of financial aid and scholarship opportunities to help make your education more manageable. Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) early to maximize your eligibility for grants, loans, and scholarships. Learn more on our Tuition and Aid page.

Study Abroad

Transfer students are welcome to study abroad during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. Scholarships are also available for students studying abroad.
