University Police
The University Police Department is a full-time, professionally trained police department, responsible for the safety and welfare of the university community. We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment on campus.
We enforce all state laws and university regulations, and prevent, detect and investigate any criminal activity on the campus. Our officers have the same authority and obligation as other state and municipal police. Our jurisdiction includes all university-owned, leased and controlled property and the adjacent streets and sidewalks. We also maintain a mutual aid agreement with the Newport News Police Department.
All Christopher Newport University police officers are sworn and certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.
Christopher Newport is designated a Crime Prevention Campus by the Virginia Criminal Justice Services Board. To attain this certification, a college or university must detail crime prevention goals, programs and accomplishments.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Christopher Newport University Police Department is to provide the University, including all faculty, staff, students and guests, with professional law enforcement services, in an efficient and effective manner, which fully supports the academic mission of the university.
Our primary goal is to ensure that all members of the University community are able to live, study, work and enjoy the full spectrum of experiences offered by the University. In order to achieve this goal, the University Police will make every effort to reduce the risk of crime to the lowest possible level. This goal will be achieved by employing twenty-four hour police patrols and security patrols of the campus grounds, the utilization of modern security technologies, the enforcement of federal and state laws and University policies, proven crime prevention methodologies, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and identified best practices, and community programming that enhances our relationship with those who live and work on the periphery of the main campus.
Clery Act
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is the landmark federal law, originally known as the Campus Security Act, that requires colleges and universities across the United States to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses.
Because the law is tied to participation in federal student financial aid programs it applies to most institutions of higher education both public and private. It is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Clery Act is named in memory of 19-year-old Lehigh University freshman Jeanne Ann Clery who was raped and murdered while asleep in her residence hall room on April 5, 1986.

Colleges and universities that receive funding from federal financial aid programs are required to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses.
Christopher Newport University is required by state law to disclose information about all crimes against persons or property which are reported to the University Police.
The crime log will contain the previous 60 days of crime from the current date.
Silent Witness is a web-based reporting tool that allows students, faculty and staff to anonymously report crimes to University Police.
If you have information about a suspicious incident or person or a potential crime, or information on a crime that has already been committed, you can report this information to an investigator anonymously.
Lost Property
Generally, University Police is the repository for any lost items found on campus.
