Christopher Newport University does not discriminate and prohibits discrimination and harassment on the basis of age, color, disability, gender (including gender identity), genetic information (including family medical history), marital status, military status (including veteran status), national origin (including ethnicity or shared ancestry), parental status, political affiliation, pregnancy (including pregnancy related medical conditions and childbirth), race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, and any other characteristic or status protected by law as well as sexual harassment and sexual misconduct in employment, admissions, education programs and/or activities CNU provides a process for the prompt and fair resolution of reports that recognizes the rights of both complainants and respondents and complies with federal and state law. The nondiscrimination statement is posted on the university website, in handbooks, admission application materials, employment application materials, catalogs, and employment and admissions recruiting materials including any brochures and other publications.
Policy 1005 details how Christopher Newport University (CNU) addresses allegations of discrimination and harassment on the basis of legally protected characteristics or status in a fair and impartial manner in compliance with federal and state law.
Upon receipt of a report of alleged sexual violence, the Title IX Coordinator or Deputy Title IX Coordinator will convene the Campus Review Committee-Sexual Violence (CRC-SV) pursuant to Va. Code §23.1-806. Reporting of Acts of Sexual Violence following procedures described in CNU Policy 1055 Campus Violence Prevention.
In accordance with VA Code § 23.1-808(B) Sexual Violence; disciplinary immunity for certain individuals who make reports and to encourage reporting and participation in investigations, the University will not pursue disciplinary action against students for personal use of alcohol or drugs when such conduct is disclosed in connection with a good faith report or cooperation in an investigation under this Policy.
Amnesty does not apply to:
- Distribution of drugs or alcohol, especially to facilitate misconduct;
- Behavior that endangers others or puts others at risk;
- Serious or repeated policy violations unrelated to the report.
The University may refer individuals for health or substance use support if needed.
