Residency Guarantee
Christopher Newport University undergraduates are expected to live on campus, where they benefit from greater academic support, stronger connections with peers and faculty, and a more engaged campus experience.
CNU guarantees on-campus housing for all incoming freshmen for the first three years. Transfer students are eligible for on-campus housing through the completion of their junior year.
Students seeking an exemption from the Residency Guarantee for one of the reasons listed below must submit a Residency Exemption Request through the Housing Portal and provide all required supporting documentation.
To complete the request, log into the Housing Portal and navigate to the Forms tab, where the Residency Exemption Request form is located. Requests must be submitted prior to signing a housing contract for the academic year. Once a housing contract has been signed, exemptions will not be granted. For incoming first-year students, the deadline to submit the request is June 1.
CNU Residency Exemptions
- Location: Student will live with a relative within the approved distance to commute to campus (approximately 25 miles)
- Financial reasons: Student has exhausted all financial resources and residing off-campus will enable them to continue their enrollment at Christopher Newport
- Medical reasons: Student has a diagnosed medical condition (qualified under ADA guidelines) which affects their ability to successfully reside in on-campus housing AND no alternative reasonable accommodations can be made by the University to meet the medical need
- Other: Student has unique life circumstances (e.g. non-traditional college age, marriage, documented religious considerations, etc.)
